What does Liability Insurance Cost for Handyman or Maintenance Workers?

The cost of liability insurance for handyman’s in Australia varies based on a number of things including the size of your business, the types of jobs you take on, and the amount of coverage you need – $5M, $10M, $20M or $50M.

$10m of Liability insurance for a Carpenter can start from around $69 per month (for 8 installments) or $483 per year.

The above is an indicative quote only, based on a QLD Handyman with 100k turnover per year, no employees or subbies and $10m of liability. When considering what level of liability insurance to take, it’s important to consider your business.

How Much Liability Insurance do Handyman Need?

When considering how much liability insurance a handyman needs, it’s important to assess the risks involved in your work. As a handyman or maintenance worker, you may take on jobs like minor repairs, painting, or installing fixtures, which can pose risks to customers’ property or cause injury.

Most handyman opt for Public Liability Insurance with coverage of $5 million, $10 million, or $20 million, depending on the size of their projects and the risks involved. We do not generally recommend $5m of Liability Insurance as this provides minimum cover in the event of a claim. The usual amount most Tradies take is $10m.

Larger contracts or commercial work may require higher handyman insurance coverage. It’s important to assess your work scope, the types of clients you serve, and the risks you encounter to choose the right coverage.

The types of things to consider when deciding on $5m, $10m, $20m or $50m of Liability Insurance include:

  • Whether you work only on domestic projects (residential homes) or on commercial projects (including retail & hospitality)
  • The types of premises where you complete work – stand alone residential homes carry less risk than working in unit blocks/apartments or premises that have adjoining buildings.
  • Whether you work on commercial or government projects – these will require a higher level of cover and often form part of the contract requirements.

What insurance does a Handyman need?

The types of insurance a Handyman needs will depend on the size of your business, the types of clients you complete building projects for (domestic, commercial and/or government) and the services you provide. Below is the most common types of insurance a handyman would normally need as a minimum – however there will be other types of insurance you should consider based on your specific business operations.

Personal Accident Insurance

Individual Personal Accident Insurance Coverage as a result of injury, sickness, death or disability for individuals and/or sole traders with various scopes of cover to choose from.

Public Liability Insurance

This is the most crucial insurance for handyman's, protecting you if your work causes property damage or injury to a third party. For instance, if a client or passerby is injured by falling debris or damaged equipment, public liability insurance can cover legal and compensation costs.

General Property (Tools Insurance)

Handyman's or Maintenance workers often use expensive tools and equipment, so it’s important to protect these assets. General Property Insurance, also known as Tools Insurance, covers theft, loss, or accidental damage to your equipment.

Business Insurance for Tradies

Tradies that own their own business need to consider different types of policies to those that work for the company as contractors.

Commercial Motor Insurance

If you use a vehicle for your handyman business, ensuring it’s adequately insured can save you from unexpected costs in case of accidents or damage.

Trade Credit Insurance

If you offer credit terms to your clients, Trade Credit Insurance protects you from potentially being left out of pocket if clients fail to pay.
