Demystifying Insurance Jargon: A Simple Guide for Clients

Insurance can be a complex industry, filled with terminology that often confuses clients. While policies are designed to provide peace of mind, they are still a legally binding contract between the client (Insured) and the Insurer. As such the language used can sometimes create uncertainty. This list aims to simplify some of the most commonly used insurance terms, helping brokers and their clients make more informed decisions about their coverage

Key Insurance Terms Explained

Premium – This is the amount the insurer charges you. Then costs such as government fees (Stamp Duty, GST etc) and brokers fees are added on. It is an annual cost, but can be paid monthly if you prefer. The cost is influenced by various factors such as risk level, coverage type, and insurer pricing models.

Invoice cost – This is the total cost, inclusive of insurer, government and broker costs.

Excess – Also known as a deductible, the excess is the amount you agree to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance covers the remaining costs of a claim. A higher excess often leads to lower premiums, but it also means a greater upfront cost when making a claim.

Policyholder – This refers to the individual or entity that owns the insurance policy and is entitled to make claims under its coverage. Also known as the Insured.

Indemnity – This is what you want to hear at claim time. It’s when the insurer agrees to cover your claim, based on the limits of the policy wording.

PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) – A crucial document provided by insurers, the PDS outlines the terms, conditions, inclusions, and exclusions of a policy. Reading this document carefully is essential to understanding your coverage.

Underwriting – This is the process insurers use to assess risk and determine policy pricing. Underwriters consider factors like health, occupation, driving history, and property conditions before offering coverage.

Exclusions – These are specific situations or events that your insurance policy does not cover. Understanding these is critical to avoiding unexpected surprises when making a claim.
