Does it feel like insurance talks in another language?

Insurance Jargon

Have you ever picked up an insurance document and thought “who wrote this?” Sometimes it may seem these documents were written by a team of scholarly professors in English, Latin, Physics, Maths and Philosophy.

And why are there so many documents? For one policy you can multiple documents, such as a;

  • Tax Invoice
  • Schedule
  • Proposal
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Certificate of Currency
  • Statement of Account
  • Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)
  • Supplementary PDS

In fairness, it’s asking too much of the average punter to fully grasp how their policy works, especially when most of the words sound like legal insurance jargon. My wife (who is also an insurance broker) arranged our family’s health insurance recently, and we both said the same thing. We know our way around a Product Disclosure Statement for insurance expertly. However, for this different category, with its medical lingo, it still, wasn’t easy.

So why is it so hard?
Law. Legality. Legislation…all those fun words. When I mentioned those “scholarly professors” earlier, the truth is your policy wording is written by a team of lawyers. A big team. A big, experienced team.

But I thought I was just buying a product?

Well, you are, but did you know that insurance policies are actually legal contracts between you and the insurer? In the same way you sign a legal contract to buy a house or even buy a business, by purchasing your insurance policy you are agreeing to a legal contract between you and the insurer. If you purchased your policy directly with an insurer, then at claim time it is you VS insurer. Essentially, you’re two parties competing for the best outcome. Think David and Goliath…but in this example, David might not always have a rock and a sling.

I’m not saying insurers don’t pay. They certainly do. More than 90% of claims lodged between 2016 to 2020 were paid. But an insurer may do their best to limit how much they pay, so long as it is legal to do so. Enter your trusted adviser.

With the industry expertise of a trusted Ausure adviser in your corner, we go into bat for you. We review every available section, benefit, bell and whistle of your insurance policy. We advise you on potential risks, relevant policies and vital covers available to you in advance. You can then make an informed decision about which insurance policies you select.

If you ever do have to make a claim, we, as your trusted Ausure advisers, are there by your side to help you through that process. At claim time, we also review the policy in depth to maximise everything possible for you. So, you’ll be in the best possible position.

Legally we have to: the nature of the relationship a broker has with it’s clients, means that we act on behalf of you, not the insurer.

Financially, it is in our best interest for you to have the best experience possible. Just like any business, if we provide good customer service, our clients refer us and we’re able to assist more people in this way.

Morally, we must. No wriggle room here. Advice from your trusted Ausure adviser will be in your best interests.
